10+1 Unexpected British Icons Who Loved Cascais
10+1 Unexpected British Icons Who Loved Cascais
Cascais has always been a magnet for celebrities — I’ve made a few lists before (see here).
This time, I wanted something different: a list focused only on British icons.
Why? Because Portugal and the UK share the oldest alliance between countries in the world. (Don’t believe me? Click here).
⚠️ One note: I’ve left out sports stars like footballers and Formula 1 drivers — that would’ve been too easy.
So, without further delay… here’s the list:
🇬🇧 1. Winston Churchill
In 1950, the legendary Prime Minister painted the beautiful Cascais Bay while staying at Palácio Estoril.
But why is he on the list? Jokes like this: “Don’t interrupt me while I’m interrupting.”
🕵️ 2. Ian Fleming
The father of James Bond got inspired here. During WWII, Fleming spent time at Casino Estoril, surrounded by spies from both sides.
The vibe helped shape Casino Royale. So yes — you can thank our coastline for the Bond Girls.
🎸 3. Eric Clapton
The guitar god has been spotted enjoying private holidays in Cascais.
I still believe Layla was a Portuguese girl — even if Wikipedia disagrees (check here)
⚡️ 4. J.K. Rowling
While living in Porto, J.K. Rowling visited Cascais often.
Did you know? 🧹 The Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it got published. #NeverGiveUp
🎤 5. Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones)
Yes, Woody was in the Cascais area in the 80s & 90s. Not sure if he was here for fun or rehab.
As he once said: “I’ve been to rehab eight times. I’m either really bad at it or really love the food.”
🧠 6. Tony Blair
In 2011, before he got all tangled up in Brexit debates, the former UK Prime Minister spoke at the Estoril Conferences
Smart crowd, stunning views — can you blame him?
🔍 7. David Suchet (a.k.a. Poirot)
The world’s most famous Belgian detective (played by a Brit!) spent time in Cascais and Sintra — for filming and pleasure.
🦇 8. Christian Bale
The Dark Knight himself has family ties to Portugal and has enjoyed quiet getaways around Cascais.
🎤 9. Seal
The British soul legend has performed twice at Cascais’ Cool Jazz Festival—
the first time with Heidi Klum, the second time without… 💔
🎩 10. Charlie Chaplin
The Little Tramp visited Cascais & Estoril as a guest of King Umberto II — the exiled Italian monarch living in Cascais.
🏴☠️ +1 Bonus: Sir Francis Drake
In 1589, England’s most feared corsair landed in Peniche and then moved to Cascais with a fleet to help Portugal break free from Spanish rule.
Drake described Cascais “as a sweet town and cleanly kept” but after his troops left, a week later, they had turned it into “a place most loathsome”
Anyway, the mission failed — but it sparked a long Anglo-Portuguese friendship.
