Café Saudade: One of the Best Cafés in Sintra
Café Saudade: One of the Best Cafés in Sintra
Saudade is that unique Portuguese word everyone loves to explain to foreigners.
I won’t😅 You’ve probably heard it enough times already. And if you haven’t, ask your AI assistant.
Instead, let me tell you about Café Saudade — one of my favourite little finds in Sintra.
Located just a short walk from Sintra’s historic centre, Café Saudade is charming, slightly quirky and full of personality — a welcome alternative to some of the more touristy spots around town.
The café opened in 2009 in a historic building that was once home to the Mathilde Queijadas factory, famous for its traditional Sintra queijadas
— apparently even enjoyed by King Ferdinand II.
Today, it’s a great spot for breakfast, brunch, coffee or a light lunch. The atmosphere is cosy, portions are generous and prices are surprisingly reasonable for Sintra.
What to try
The XL scones are one of the stars, alongside toasted sandwiches, homemade cakes and traditional Sintra pastries.
My tip? Come for a late breakfast or an early lunch, then explore Sintra on foot. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stop for a quick coffee and end up staying much longer.
Local Cascais verdict: Charming, affordable and full of character. Definitely one to add to your Sintra list.
